OpenAI says: "Library lets you find and reuse files that you upload to or create in ChatGPT." It says "Library is available to ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, and Business users". OpenAI says that when Memory is on, ChatGPT "can remember relevant preferences and details from your chats and other available sources". Memory features can vary by plan and region. Custom instructions apply to all chats, up to 1,500 characters on Free and Go and up to 5,000 on Plus and Pro.

How ChatGPT handles a job requirement the resume does not support is not stated on the OpenAI pages checked. OpenAI says ChatGPT "can produce incorrect or misleading outputs". It advises users to "check important information".

OpenAI says: "When you use our services for individuals, such as ChatGPT and Codex, we may use your content to train our models." It also says: "When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models." Its temporary chat page says: "A temporary chat stays out of your chat history and is not used to improve OpenAI models while it remains temporary."

Practical steps

How to tailor a resume with ChatGPT without inventing experience

  1. Paste your current resume and the full job description into one chat.
  2. Ask ChatGPT to list the job's requirements and, next to each one, quote the resume line that supports it.
  3. Ask it to mark each requirement your resume does not support and to leave those requirements out of the draft.
  4. Answer those gaps yourself with facts you can show, or leave them out.
  5. Ask for a rewrite that uses only supported lines and keeps employers, job titles, dates, and numbers unchanged.
  6. Compare the draft with your original resume line by line. Remove anything you cannot verify before you apply.
